Sparkle Auditions winners announced
The 2009 STAR Awards ceremony, hosted by Mike Baker, TV and radio broadcaster, and Reeta Chakrabarti, BBC political correspondent, opened with a blast as learners from Reynolds Performing Arts showcased a brilliant, athletic and technically demanding dance performance. The learners, who had won the opportunity to open the ceremony on the main stage through the ‘Sparkle Auditions’ wowed the audience with their quick moves and precision timing.
The Sparkle Auditions is a national competition which searched for talented learners to open the sixth national ceremony. The winner showcased on the main stage at the glittering, cosmos-themed national awards ceremony in London, in front of an audience of 500 guests, and received the Sparkle Auditions trophy. Runners up also performed at the event.

The winner of the 2009 Sparkle Auditions is Reynolds Performing Arts, with their dance interpretation of the song 'Human' by the Killers. The subtle changes within the music of this song have allowed the choreographer to incorporate a number of different dance styles in the exciting and energy fuelled performance which opened the ceremony.

Westminster Kingsway College The showcase is a selection of popular music songs performed live by BTEC National Diploma Music students. The performance engaged and inspired the audience and undoubtedly got feet tapping. The performers are second year students aged 17 - 19 who have worked as a collective to build up an extensive repertoire covering all popular music from reggae, rock, jazz and funk. |

City of Bristol College Media and make-up students from the college showcased theatrical body art designs around the theme of 'planets'. This year one of the students in the team was placed 1st in the UK Skills national final, working to the theme of 'super heroes'. The students are very enthusiastic about the industry and have entered many national competitions. |

North Warwickshire and Hinckely College BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Dance) learners who have only just started their formal training performed a vibrant dance piece called 'Multiplicity' using a diverse range of dance styles as its main influence. |

Sussex Coast College Hastings Jump Jump is a stop frame animation project produced by students studying the National Diploma Art and Design at Sussex Coast College Hastings. This amazing feat of film and animation took three days to record from start to finish and involved over 600 still images being taken before they were streamed for the final edit. |

City College Norwich, Regional Centre for Learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) drumming group Students at the centre have been learning to play percussion during their lunchtimes at the college; it provides purpose and opportunities for learners with ASD in an unstructured time of the day. The drumming group is specialised in playing rhythms from North Africa, the Middle East and Egypt. |

West Suffolk College Students with LDD, SLDD and ASD and disabilities entertained the guests with an excerpt from 'A Christmas Carol'. Students and staff worked alongside each other to perform a very funny riverdance sequence from the show. |

The STAR Awards Sparkle Auditions are sponsored by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) which would like to encourage STAR nominations that show a positive contribution to safeguarding learners in the further education sector.
