Who can make a nomination?

Anyone can nominate for an LSIS STAR Award. Learners, colleagues and managers can all nominate any eligible person in the learning and skills sector whose commitment and professionalism has made a difference to the learning environment in which they work. Nominations for family members are not permitted.

Who can be nominated?

To be eligible, STAR nominees must work in the further education, learning and skills sector in England. This includes: adult education institutions; voluntary sector and community-based providers; private sector providers and employers; sixth form colleges; offender learning providers; FE colleges; some HE institutions providing further education; specialist colleges; UK online centres and learndirect centres.

Nominees must work in an organisation that receives LSC funding and is not a school or university. Of those people who are eligible we want to hear about individuals who have truly made a difference to those around them with their commitment, and their ability to help learners achieve and exceed their learning goals.

What are the award categories?

The ten categories for 2009 are:

Following huge interest in the 2008 awards from learners, an additional award for the teaching, training and learning practitioner category will be given out this year. There will be a teaching, training and learning practitioner nominated by their peers and a teaching, training and learning practitioner nominated by learners.

  • Support role

Open to individuals in a non-teaching role who support the effective operation of the organisation.

  • Skills for Life

Open to lecturers, tutors or other skills for life teaching or support staff who excel in the teaching of literacy, language or numeracy and inspire, motivate and encourage learners to succeed.

  • Response to learners' needs

Open to individuals or teams who provide programmes to meet the needs of specific groups of learners or communities.

  • Engaging employers

Open to individuals or teams who provide programmes to meet the needs of employers.

  • Workforce development

Open to individuals or teams who provide programmes to develop the workforce of their own organisation.

  • Learning support

Open to individuals who provide learning support.

  • Leadership

Open to any individual who has demonstrated high leadership skills and practice and inspires, motivates and leads others.

  • Innovation

Nominations for all categories are expected to address the nominee's commitment to equality and diversity.

Where can I make a nomination?

You can nominate online by clicking the ‘nominate now’ button shown on all pages of this site. This will take you through to a nomination wizard where you can enter the details of your nomination.

Alternatively, you can request a nomination pack which contains hard copy nomination forms by using the details on the contact us page. We can also take nominations over the telephone via the helpline number.

Return to questions

How much work is involved in making a nomination?

Nominating a STAR is a quick and easy process. You simply have to fill in your name and contact details and the name and contact details of the person you wish to nominate. Then select the most appropriate category for your STAR or team by reading the award categories and questions.

You will then need to answer four questions covering the criteria for that category, using no more than 75 words in each, to say why your nominee should win the award this year.

The judges will look particularly for evidence of the individual's "wow" factor, rather than merely confirmation that they are doing their job. It will be that extra commitment and dedication with fresh, innovative or particularly successful approaches that will have made your nominee stand out from their peers.

Return to questions

Can I nominate more than one STAR?

You may nominate as many STARs as you like.

What happens next after I have nominated?

All nominations made online will be acknowledged with a confirmation email. If you have any queries, or your details change after a nomination is made, you can contact the STAR Awards team by using the details on the contact us page.

After nominations close in June, the LSIS STAR Awards judging panel - made up of independent experts from the further education system - will assess nominations for how well they address the published questions for each category.

A short list of the top nominations in each category will be drawn up and announced on this website in the week commencing 18 August. Short-listed nominees and their nominators will be contacted soon afterwards and invited to attend a regional celebration event in October. Unsuccessful nominators will be notified by email. All short-listed nominees and their nominators will be invited to the 2009 LSIS STAR Awards ceremony which will be held in central London on 26 November. Around 500 guests will attend this prestigious ceremony where the winners will be announced.
